serious concerns in america and around the world. at the same time the president perhaps looking into the israeli government over differences of opinion in iran. the big and complicated picture coming up. it's all ahead as breaking news has changed everything on studio b. >> first from fox at 3:00 the deadly attack on the consulates in libya yesterday on 9-11 was a well planned commando style raid. coming to us from the chairman of the house committee commenting on the assault that killed a united states ambassador. he has been briefed on this matter and this could change a lot of things. it happened less than a year after people helped olivia took out moammar qaddafi. a mob of militants last night possibly members of an al qaeda group possibly stormed the building firing gunited states e

firing guns and rocket propelled grenades. they climbed a wall of the compound appeared to meet very little resistance. in the early going one or two would run in and out then they got this flag. not a lot of damage done there. not alove the enormous cameras and this scene for the cameras. they burned and replaced it with a black islamic flag. the attackers in ghazi killed four americans. among them the ambassador chris stevens he was trying to escape at the time we are told. we are learning more about what may be motive. according to a member of the senate intelligence committee bill nelson say it could be attached to the killing of a top al qaeda leader. it may be because of an anti islamic movie that ridiculed

mohammed. the initial reporting is one thing now we are getting into a bigger picture. one news organization is reporting the following. the bin gagain ghazi attack was planned and they used the movie and the protest as a diversion. secretary of state hillary clinton condemned the attack in libya. >> the united states condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous shocking attack. we are working with libya to secure our diplomats. my administration will increase the posts around the world. make no mistakes we will work with the libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people. >> this is an attack that should shock the conscience of people of all faith around the world. we condemn in the strongest terms this senseless act of violence and we sent our prayers

to the families, friends, colleagues of those we have lost. >> the republican presidential candidate mitt romney also condemned the center lines. the governor also used it as an opportunity to criticize the white house. >> the attacks of libya and egypt under score the world remains a dangerous place and american leadership is still sorely needed. in the face of this violence america cannot shrink from the responsibility to lead. >> meanwhile the united states military officials tell fox news the pentagon is sending a team of about 50 marines in libya to begin helping with security. jonathan hunt has been working on the story since the break i guess last night during fox report. there seems to be a growing consensus. we were watching this last night, jonathan, people have shown up at a protest in one country not a lot was done. suddenly there are protests in another country and we start talking dead people.

>> all of the experts are talking about this. in cairo at the embassy protest you appear to have a large relatively spontaneous mob unarmed a very, very different situation. first of all a much smaller group heavily armed guns and rocket propelled grenades planned from the beginning. they targeted a u.s. consulate not nearly the security the embassy would have had at the capital. people asked questions as to whether this was planned. there is increasing evidence that this was indeed a planned even targeted attack. the result the death of u.s. ambassador tore christopher stevens and two others.

ambassador steven's last moments we are told he was taken to the hospital a doctor treated him and he died of severe smoke inhalation asphyxiation. we have seen those photographs. we are not showing them for the moment at least. i have also shown them to members of our medical a team, dr. seigel among em. he is looking at a still photograph but it's not inconsistent with severe smoke inhalation partly because of the coloring around the mouth. these are photographs you have also seen the photograph ambassador stevens had. >> we are not sure what happened yet. there's no way to know precisely what happened yet. with all of the information we have been getting it appears as we walk around new york city and you walked around your town yesterday on this 11th year remembrance of 9-11 that we were attacked on our soil, you are

embassy is our soil. we were attacked on our soil and our envoy. that is starting to sound like what this story is. >> from what we are getting from all officials that appears to be the case. it appears increasingly that this was a planned attack officials telling katherine herrity they were planned even targeted. attempts to move today to beef up security at u.s. embassies and consulates around the globe. six embassies and egypt 7 in total have already issued warnings on their web site saying that they may well be the target of attacks asking all of the staff to take extra precautions. all of this of course trying to save the lives and protect the lives of people like ambassador stevens who wanted nothing more than to help the people of post gadhafi libya.

and make no mistake justice will be done. the president went over to the state department making it clear that the white house is grieving with them. he went on to las vegas for a campaign event. he is still on his way there now air force one. it was a scheduled event. republicans criticizing that. romney went on with his fundraising which he already had planned before this as well. >> if this was a targeted attack on an american official an american soil that happens to be overseas you would think there would be a new posture of the white house if they support that. >> no doubt about it. i shouted a question to the president. he didn't answer mine. i asked do you believe this was an act of war? as you say you have four americans killed on essentially

american soil on foreign territory. it is an american ground there within the embassy grounds or within the consulate grounds. the president didn't answer that. he said justice will be needed out, what that means whether there will be military response after all of this investigation is done. as you mentioned all of the facts coming in are very troubling. in his remarks the president said he will be working with the libyan government to get to the bottom of all of this. there are reports after he moved to the consulate of the second building which is deemed to be more safe. the libyan security forces may have tipped them off as to where they were and they were killed after that. that raises more questions about a coordinated attack and whether some of the libyan security forces were in on it. >> we will wait for news to develop. ed henry at the white house. we will go to the pentagon in a

yesterday's planned attacks although we cannot confirm that. southern spain to the libyan capital tripoli. the state department asked the be pentagon to send military transport planes to libya in the event they have to evacuate dead or wounded u.s. citizens. wow, jennifer griffin is at the pentagon at this hour. what is the u.s. military doing in the wake of the attack on benghazi? >> we can confirm a u.s. aircraft landed in libya. it is expected to take off any time now with the four dead as well as wounded in the benghazi attack. we expect that to happen any time. it is not clear whether they will be brought to the u.s. or brought to another military hospital in route. there are no u.s. personnel left in the consulate in benghazi. a house now being guarded by

local libyan release. 50 marines will not be going to the site of the attack in benghazi. they will stay in the capital to protect the embassy. >> in a world where everyone can post on-line to the world, jennifer, we are now faced with this guy in florida, this quote, preacher, unquote, who has a congregation of much less than 40 it is my understanding who put a video on-line apparently really, really disparaging the prophet mohammed and inflaming at least part of the world. that may not be the reason the attack on the ambassador happened but it has contributed. the top u.s. general has called this guy in florida. his name i don't want to use because i don't believe he deserves any attention. >> this pastor in florida not the first time he was

threatening koran burnings. at that time robert gates asked him to please not burn the koran because there were so many u.s. troops on the front lines in in afghanistan who could be harmed. now we have learned general martin dempsey joint chief of staff called the pastor and spoke briefly with him this morning. and we are told by the colonel the spokesman for dempsey asking him expressing his concerns over the nature of the film. this film called "muslim innocence" the tensions it will inflame and the violence it will cause. general dempsey asked this pastor in florida to consider withdrawing his support for the film. i am told the pastor was noncommittal. general dempsey concerned about the 74,000 u.s. troops in afghanistan. the taliban is already threatening to attack americans because of this 15-minute film that was placed on youtube. the afghan government has blocked the youtube site so

somebody most likely al qaeda in libya. the attacks acured after the terrorist group leaders called to seek revenge. they had a video on 9-11 saying the drone strike did kill the guy but he was killed back in june. they acknowledge it on the same day the attack happened. the death of that leader was the biggest set back for that branch of al qaeda since the united states killed osama bin laden. adding to that the embassy 11 years to the day of the 9-11 terror attack. the intelligence committee the florida senator bill nelson calling for immediate investigation for any al qaeda link. he joins us from capitol hill. what does intelligence suggest to us? >> well, shepherd i don't know the intelligence yet but we know what you just said that all of a

sudden this number one guy in al qaeda that replaced bin ladenal zawahri puts out a video that was timed for release monday night. monday night late. then the attacks occurred the next day, and in this video sits the death of this number two back in june, the death of number two in all of al qaeda his name is al libi. he was a libyan. the number one al qaeda guy says libyans should attack americans. now the coincidence of the timing is extraordinary. in our investigation into this we obviously need to find out if that is a link or is it a

separately planned attack that was merely co incidental. >> if this was a revenge attack and if there is any state involvement, then what? >> well, then the united states will have to deal accordingly. the likelihood is there wasn't state involvement. this was the excitement of al qaeda of its followers if that's what proves to be true. without a state involvement, and of course we will continue to keep going after the leadership of al qaeda. remember just a few days ago the newspapers reported that the number two al qaeda leader in yemen was taken down. so the progress continues on taking down and dismantling the leadership of al qaeda. >> in a vacuum thousands of miles away, senator nelson, would you agree that it seems

outside the realm of possibility that the same day the united states was attacked by al qaeda, the same day that somebody released a video saying yeah, you killed our guy, that they would be able to 20 guys with an rpg be able to get to our embassy and aassassinate our em ambassador? >> well, we don't know the answer to that, but that is certainly a coincidence that needs to be explored, or it is possible since the video had been obviously filmed sometime before, that it was all coordinated with the al qaeda operatives. we will have to see if it comes out. these guys are fairly good planners and they love to have this kind of revenge stuff that is going on. this is what we are going to have to find out. >> whether it was they or others somebody was able to get in our

embassy take out an al qaeda leader and they were going to retaliate and nas nate or at least murder our ambassador. sir, is there a sweeping over hall or at least a sweeping review of security with these installations around the world now? >> clearly security has to be increased. this is the first loss of an ambassador since the 1970s. we cannot allow our people to be harmed in this manner. >> senator, good to see you. we will follow up on the investigation. thank you. >> a man who went over there and helped them save that city. a man who helped the libyan people who were rising up against their own government saver the city of benghazi. that's what he was there for. he said it was the proudest thing he has ever done that he wanted to help the people of libya and they murdered him. secretary of state hillary clinton expressed quote serious concern that the violence in libya and protests in egypt

could spread across the middle east. she talked about the potential really spreading around the world. because of that secretary of state hillary clinton said today the state bedepartment cranked security at diplomatic facilities around the world. >> there may be more time later to reflect but today we have work to do. there is no higher priority than protecting men and women that have served. >> nit is not only the united states's responsibility it is also the job of the host nation which can be very complicated especially a place that recently emerged from a year long civil war and no one is entirely sure who is in charge of what. wendell, libya is a rocky place it may be an under statement of the day. >> what complicates things is the many militias in libya who

worked together to take down moammar qaddafi but don't see eye to eye on a lot of things. as you say diplomatic security, diplomatic installation, primarily the focus of the host country but in this case you have a libyan government that is simply not strong enough to take the militia's weapons away. topple a security isn't as strong as that as an embassy anyway. the consulate in benghazi it's a house no marine detachment. they make clear it does not effect the u.s. libyan relationship. >> this was an attack by a small and savage root, not the people or government of libya. every where chris and his team went in libya in a country stared by war and tyranny, they were hailed as friends and

partners. >> ambassador stevens and the other three who were killed had gone to the consulate to try and evacuate american and libyan workers after the protests turned violence -- violent. >> what is the level we know this sort of violence spread verses this is a one-off as secretary clinton mentioned by a small band of bad bodes. >> there is concern. they ordered tighter security at the u.s. diplomatics around the world. he personally appealed to afghan president hamid karzai to maintain calm there and afghanistan's propensity to viacheslav lens insult oh islam. there was a demonstration police using tear gas and rubber bullets to protest at the u.s. embassy. no reports of casualties. the tone nearbyian government did protect it there. there were protests in libya and cairo coordinated.

and islam that need to be regarded. often times they can agree the i say almostists not all muslims but the violent jihadists can agree they want to vaj violent jihad against democracies and western countries. >> should there be a time where we reconsider whether countries that are in such turmoil whether we offer ambassadors under these sorts of circumstances? >> traditionally, you know, as commentators have said a lot depends on the local guard and do you have a couple of layers of defense at the embassies. you have u.s. marines but they are at the bigger embassies. they are to guard the compound. you have the diplomatic security service part of the state department. the state department in house secret service to defend ambassadors. they can only do so much against armed mobs. in p places where you have complete breakdown of security cust merrilly you close the embassies or cut them back to a

>> this happened in the united states embassy in libya is bringing new swipes on the campaign trail. i reported earlier the republican candidate mitt romney called the administration's initial reaction to the attack quote disgraceful. earlier paul ryan strongly condemned the murders while in wisconsin. he he can quoed governor romney's criticism that the white house showed weakness. >> we don't want a world where adversaries are so tempted to

test us and allies are worried about trusting us. that is unfortunately the path that we are on right now. i really worry about that. >> now president obama's campaign is firing back. a spokes marne accused the governor's campaign of making a political attack during a time of tragedy. what's the latest from the president's campaign? >> romney issued a statement chiding the administration for not first forcefully condemning the attacks and instead sympathizing with the attackers. that engaged this response from the owe bam paw campaign. we are shocked at a time the united states of america is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in libya governor romney would choose to launch a political attack. romney stood by his initial comments. >> i think we ever hesitate when we see something which is a violation of our principles we express immediately when we feel the president and his administration have done something which is inconsistent with the principles of america.

>> he stood by the comment and built on it in that conference as well. >> is the romney using this to make a broader statement? >> well, you know, he has been criticized for having a lack of foreign policy experience. you have to wonder about the objects of that thrown together essentially a press conference this morning. he was flanked by flags he was standing at a podium. you have to wonder if they were going after something that looks like a presidential press conference. he took questions and during that talked about the presidential foreign policy. >> as i have watched over the past three and a half years, the president has had some successes. he's had some failures. it's a hit or miss approach. but it has not been based upon sound foreign policy. >> while he certainly has not had the same kind of experience the president has he says he has a three point plan for turning things around politically around the world. >> shannon. thanks. we will have continuing coverage of the attacks through out the day in studio b.

>> here's the chain of events as they appear to be coming into play from yesterday's attack in libya. first there was a video which came out late in the evening early morning on tuesday under which al qaeda was admitting their number two guy had been killed back in june by the united states. in that they asked the people of libya to attack the united states. hours later, an attack on our embassy and our ambassador is now dead. jonathan hunt has been covering it from the beginning. none of it made sense yesterday. the video didn't make sense. now it's here. >> we talked before about how these videos can sometimes have a coded message. you look at that, the video comes out on monday the attack happened tuesday. they didn't think we need to plan an attack. perhaps that video was the go signal.
